Calculating planetary positions…

What Is a Birth Chart?

A birth chart — also called a natal chart — is a precise astronomical map of the sky at the exact moment and location of your birth. It shows where the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto were positioned across the twelve zodiac signs and twelve astrological houses.

Astrologers have studied natal charts for thousands of years, from ancient Mesopotamia through Hellenistic Greece to the modern psychological astrology practiced today. Your birth chart is considered a blueprint of your personality — a snapshot of cosmic energy imprinted at the first breath of your life.

Unlike your Sun sign, which most people know from newspaper horoscopes, your full birth chart is unique to you. Even twins born minutes apart can have meaningfully different charts if they were born in different places.

What Does Your Birth Chart Reveal?

The Big Three: Sun, Moon and Rising Sign

The three most important points in any birth chart are your Sun sign, Moon sign, and Ascendant (Rising sign). Together they describe your core identity, emotional world, and the face you show to others.

Your Sun sign reflects your conscious identity and core life purpose — the qualities you are here to develop and express fully in this lifetime.

Your Moon sign describes your emotional nature, instincts, and what you need to feel safe and nourished. It changes signs every 2.5 days, which is why many people with the same Sun sign feel completely different on the inside.

Your Rising sign — or Ascendant — is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. It describes your outer personality, physical presence, and how others perceive you when they first meet you. This is why birth time matters: the Ascendant changes sign every two hours.

The Ten Planets

Each planet in your chart governs a specific area of life and expresses itself through the qualities of the zodiac sign it occupies:

  • Sun — identity, ego, vitality, life purpose
  • Moon — emotions, instincts, unconscious patterns
  • Mercury — communication, thinking style, how you learn
  • Venus — love, attraction, beauty, values, money
  • Mars — drive, ambition, anger, sexual energy
  • Jupiter — expansion, luck, philosophy, growth
  • Saturn — discipline, limitations, life lessons, karma
  • Uranus — rebellion, innovation, sudden change
  • Neptune — dreams, spirituality, illusion, creativity
  • Pluto — transformation, power, death and rebirth

The Twelve Houses

The twelve houses each represent a different sphere of life — from your physical body and self-image (1st house) to your career and public reputation (10th house) to your spiritual life and hidden strengths (12th house). The house a planet occupies tells you where its energy is most strongly expressed in your daily experience.

Aspects: How the Planets Interact

Planets in your chart form geometric angles to one another called aspects — conjunctions, trines, squares, oppositions, and sextiles. These relationships describe the dynamic interplay between different parts of your personality. Some aspects flow harmoniously; others create productive tension that drives growth.

How Accurate Is This Calculator?

Our birth chart calculator uses NASA JPL Keplerian orbital elements — the same mathematical foundation behind Swiss Ephemeris, the industry-standard database used by Astro.com and AstroSeek. Calculations have been verified for dates spanning 1800 to 2050, accurate to within approximately 10 to 15 arcminutes.

The house system used is Placidus, the most widely used system in Western astrology. All calculations happen entirely within your browser. No birth data is stored on our servers or shared with any third party.

Frequently Asked Questions

What information do I need for a birth chart? You need three things: your date of birth, your time of birth, and your place of birth. Birth time is essential for calculating your Rising sign and house positions. Without it, you still receive accurate planetary sign placements for all ten planets.

What is the difference between a Sun sign and a birth chart? Your Sun sign is determined by your date of birth alone and represents one of twelve zodiac signs the Sun passes through each year. A full birth chart includes the Sun sign plus the Moon, all eight planets, your Rising sign, twelve house cusps, and the aspects between planets. It is far more detailed and personally specific.

Why does birth time matter? The Ascendant changes zodiac sign approximately every two hours. All twelve houses are also calculated from the birth time and location. Even a 15-minute difference can shift the Rising sign into a different sign entirely, significantly changing the chart reading.

What is a Rising sign? Your Rising sign is the zodiac sign that was on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. It describes how you appear to others, your physical presence, and your instinctive approach to new situations. It is one of the most personally significant points in the entire chart.

Can I use this if I don’t know my birth time? Yes. Check the Unknown box next to the time fields. You will receive accurate positions and full interpretations for all ten planets. The only elements that require a birth time are the Rising sign, Midheaven, and twelve house cusps.

Is my birth data kept private? Yes. All calculations run entirely within your browser using JavaScript. No birth information is sent to, stored on, or processed by any external server. Your data never leaves your device.

What does retrograde mean on a birth chart? A retrograde planet appears to move backward through the zodiac from Earth’s perspective — an optical illusion caused by the relative orbital speeds of Earth and the other planet. In astrology, retrograde planets are associated with reflection, revision, and internalization in the life areas governed by that planet. The calculator automatically identifies all retrograde planets at your birth.

How is a birth chart different from a horoscope? A daily or weekly horoscope is written for everyone born under the same Sun sign — it is generalized. A birth chart is unique to your exact date, time, and place of birth. No two people have identical charts. A natal reading is significantly more specific and personally meaningful than any Sun-sign horoscope.
